What is a Speakers Bureau presentation like?
Our speakers’ stories provide a powerful example of how those who have struggled to overcome adversity can find the strength to inspire others to action.
Presentations generally last about an hour, although the timing is flexible according to a group's needs. They usually include one (formerly homeless) staff person, one or two other speakers, and a trainee speaker who comes to observe and learn. Presentations are offered to houses of worship, schools, community organizations, business associations, and groups participating in the Midnight Run.
After one or more speakers gives their personal testimony of homelessness, there is a brief Q&A session in which the audience can interact with the speakers. Speakers also provide information about how New York's faith community and all concerned people can help to effect policies that can have a significant impact on the lives of thousands of New Yorkers in need.
To support our speakers, expand Speakers Bureau programs, and cover transportation costs if necessary, presentation sponsors are asked to provide an honorarium. Generally, these honoraria range from $150 to $500, depending on the sponsor’s resources and location. Honoraria help support our regular Speakers Bureau support group meetings, speaker stipends and other program costs.
